Welcome To My Homepage
My name is Dave Hills. Having retired from the electronics and software industry in 2001 I now live in Dorchester, the county town of Dorset in Southern England.
"A man that coveted a retreat in this world might as agreeably spend his time, and as well in Dorchester, as in any town I know in England."
Daniel Defoe (1660-1731)
For some 30 years I sailed around the S.E. Coast of England, with occasional voyages to
France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Although this is one of the most densely populated parts of the United Kingdom, there are estuaries and
creeks where the onward march of civilisation has barely reached.
Since retirement I have moved my boat to Poole Harbour on the S. Coast of England.
My niece Patsy introduced me to family history research and I have been
exploring the ways that computers, email and the Internet can help with this.
The main branches of our family tree originate in Cornwall, Devon, Kent and
Yorkshire. My family history pages can tell you more and show you a few photographs.
The family history research showed that my gg-grandfather was a schooner
captain based at Charlestown in Cornwall and that other ancestors had a shipbuilding
yard there in the mid 19th century. This started me researching their careers and I have now collected some fascinating details about my ancestor's ships and voyages, which you can read in my maritime history pages.
