Engineer

The sloop Engineer, Official Number 11457, was built by Anthony Luke at Charlestown in 1841 and first registered at Fowey number 8 of that year.
Anthony Luke owned 38 of her shares and his brother John, of Plymouth owned 8 shares. The remaining 18 shares were distributed among 6 local owners.[1]

Although the Engineer was the first vessel built by the Lukes at the Charlestown yard, she outlived both her builder Anthony Luke, and his son William, his successor.

Her end came on the 4th of March 1897 when she was wrecked at Bedruthan Steps between Newquay and Padstow on the North Cornish coast, with the loss of the master and both crew.[2]

There was only a light offshore breeze and a low swell when I took this photograph. When the Engineer was wrecked, there was a full gale blowing straight into this bay from the Atlantic.

You can read about other Charlestown ships in my Luke of Charlestown page.
