Sept 29th 1856, Elsinore.The Pet, (schnr.) Rundle, of Fowey, from Charlestown, for Stockholm, with clay, put in here 27th Sept. with loss of an anchor, 30 fathoms of chain, windlass broken, sails damaged &c., having encountered heavy gales in the North Sea, but proceeded yesterday.
A brig, apparently a collier, bound N. with main mast head carried away, yards, topgallant mast, and topmast hanging over the side was passed 20th Sept. in lat 56 N. lon. 4 E, by the Pet, Rundle, arrived at this port. It was blowing a strong gale NE. at the time.

Monday Sept 28 1868 column 3:
RAMSGATE[26,WSW; 27, SW to S]
Arrived 27th Pet (schnr. of Fowey) from Deptford for Newport- with manure; assisted in, totally dismasted, and with loss of bulwarks, stanchions &c, having been athwart of a barque lying at anchor in the Downs the previous evening.

Column 9 - &follg. recd. 28th per E.T. at 10.47 a.m.
RAMSGATE, 28th Sept, The WITCH OF THE WAVE (barq.) and PET (schr.) have been in collision, and are now in this harbour for repairs.

Tuesday 29th Sept 1868 column 22:
RAMSGATE 28th Sept.
The WITCH OF THE WAVE, Guthrie, which put in here today after collision with the PET, is from Shields to Pernambuco; she had the bowsprit carried away, cutwater and several planks in bows damaged, chain plates adrift, and part of topgallant rails, stanchions and covering board on starboard side gone; after the collision the pumps were sounded and a considerable leak in the fore peak discovered; the pumps have constantly to be attended to.
The PET (schr.), Lobb, from London to Newport, with manure, which has put in here yesterday, dismasted, after the collision, had two feet of water in her hold.

Monday Oct 19th 1868 column 3:

Arrived 17th Jane & Ellen, Jones from London for Newport - to load cargo ex Pet, Lobb which put into Ramsgate, dismasted, &c., 27th Sept.
Sailed 18th Witch of the Wave, Guthrie for Pernambuco, after repairing.

1868 Nov 16th A. Ayrton instituted a cause of damages on behalf of the owners of the vessel "Witch of the Waves" against the vessel "Pet" and freight in the sum of £600
Nov 18th Plaintiff Proctor filed Warrant.
Dec 21st Plaintiffs Proctor filed affidavit of ?? Ayrton with notice of sale.
Dec 22nd The judge decreed the vessel Pet to be appraised and sold.
The court papers [HCA19/458] state that advertisements were placed in the Shipping and Mercantile Gazette, The Times, and The Ramsgate Gazette.
Note: Search of these newspapers has not yet located the advertisements.

May 15th The master of Witch of the Wave was not satisfied with the amount raised from the sale of the Pet, so he made the following statement:
"...At about 8.45pm on 26th (Sept 1868) she (Witch of the Wave) was still at anchor in the Downs in a proper berth with her regulation riding light duly exhibited and burning brightly when she was run into by the schooner Pet. The said vessel Pet was underway at the time of the said collision...."
"In the said collison, the Witch of the Wave's bowsprit was entirely carried away, her cutwater was damaged her bows were ??? and started etc."
"I have paid or caused to be paid for repairs to the said Witch of the Wave the sum of £123.11s.5d and for expenses of discharging, surveys, protest, towage and pilotage and port charges and other necessary disbursements the sum of £104.3s.3d and charge for demurrage of £71.13s.8d. The expenses far exceed the sum of £178.10s.11d, the net proceeds from the sale of the Pet. Liverpool 15th May 1869"

May 25th The judge directed the net proceeds of £178.10.11 to be paid to the plaintiffs proctor in part satisfaction of the said damages.
May 27th Plaintiffs proctor accepted the said sum.

The Pet was re-registered at Folkestone No.1 of 1869 (Endorsed on 1848 certificate)

Pet of Plymouth, with copper ore, ran for Port Talbot Bar without pilot, and before there was water for her to come over the bar, and struck to the north of the breakwater, where she sunk; crew took to the rigging, and were taken off evening of the 1st. inst. by the Mumbles lifeboat. Vessel will be a total wreck. 3.12.80
